Recovery
2–4 weeks off work, with a compression garment worn for 4–6 weeks; strenuous exercise generally resumes after 6 weeks, once cleared by the surgeon.
A tummy tuck removes loose, excess skin from the abdomen and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles, which can separate or stretch due to pregnancy, significant weight change, or ageing. It's a common next step for patients who have reached a stable weight, or for mothers whose abdominal muscles didn't fully come back together after pregnancy — a condition called diastasis recti that exercise alone can't fully correct.
The procedure involves a horizontal incision low on the abdomen (its length depends on how much skin needs removing), through which the surgeon repairs the muscle layer and removes excess skin, before repositioning the navel. It is often combined with liposuction to refine the surrounding waist and flanks in a single operation.
It is not a weight-loss procedure — the best candidates are close to their goal weight and, if planning future pregnancies, generally advised to wait, since pregnancy can undo the muscle repair.
