Recovery
Most patients return to desk work within a few days; a compression garment is worn for 4–6 weeks, and final contour is visible around 3 months.
Liposuction of the abdomen removes localised fat that hasn't responded to diet and exercise, using a thin cannula inserted through small incisions to suction fat from beneath the skin. It's a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment — the best results come in patients who are already close to a stable, healthy weight and want to refine a specific area.
It works best on patients with good skin elasticity, since the skin needs to retract smoothly over the new contour once fat is removed; patients with significant loose skin may be better served by a tummy tuck, which removes skin as well as fat, or a combination of both procedures. Techniques vary (tumescent, ultrasound-assisted, power-assisted) but the underlying goal — targeted fat removal with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue — is the same.
Results become visible as post-operative swelling resolves, with final contour typically settling over a few months.
