Swelling is most noticeable in the first week and largely resolves within 2 weeks, with final contour visible over a few months as swelling fully settles.
Buccal fat removal reduces the buccal fat pads — deposits of fat located deep in the cheeks, below the cheekbone — to create a slimmer, more contoured, sculpted facial appearance. It's typically sought by patients whose cheeks appear fuller or rounder than they'd like regardless of their overall body weight, since buccal fat volume doesn't necessarily correlate with weight elsewhere.
The procedure is performed entirely inside the mouth, through small incisions on the inner cheek, so there's no visible external scarring at all. A conservative amount of fat is removed to maintain natural facial contour and avoid an overly hollow appearance, particularly important since facial fat naturally continues to decrease with age.
Because buccal fat removal is not reversible, candidates are carefully assessed to confirm the change suits their facial structure and won't appear overly gaunt as they age.
