Preparing for Your First Plastic Surgery Consultation

A good consultation is a two-way conversation. Here's how to get the most out of yours, whatever procedure you're considering.

Whether you're exploring a cosmetic procedure or a reconstructive one, the first consultation sets the tone for everything that follows. Going in a little prepared makes it much more useful — for you and for the surgeon trying to understand your situation.

Start with your own goals, written down if it helps. "I want my nose to look different" is a starting point, but "I don't like the bump on the bridge and want a straighter profile" gives a surgeon something concrete to respond to. If you have reference photos of results you like (or don't like), bring them — they're a genuinely useful communication tool, not something to feel self-conscious about.

Bring your real medical history, not a summary of what you think is relevant. Medications, allergies, past surgeries, chronic conditions, and — importantly — smoking status all affect surgical planning and safety. Leaving something out because it seems unrelated is one of the most common ways a consultation misses something important.

Ask about the surgeon's experience with your specific procedure, not just their general credentials. It's a completely normal, expected question — a confident surgeon will answer it directly, including how they handle complications if they arise.

Get specific about recovery, not just the procedure itself. How much time off work will you realistically need? What can't you do, and for how long? Are there follow-up appointments, and how many? These practical details matter as much as the surgical technique for planning your life around the procedure.

Ask about pricing structure clearly: what's included (the surgery itself, anaesthesia, facility fees, follow-up visits), and what isn't. A reputable clinic should be able to give you a clear breakdown, or at minimum, a clear explanation of what determines final pricing and when you'll know the exact number.

Finally, it's completely reasonable to not decide anything at the first consultation. A good surgeon expects patients to take time to think it over — pressure to book immediately is a reasonable thing to be wary of. The goal of a first consultation is clarity, not a same-day commitment.
